A Plastic-Free Future?

We were proud to partner with our friends to host a screening of the award-winning documentary, Plastic People, here in Spokane. Together with Spokane Zero Waste, Spokane Riverkeeper, and Measure Meant, we hosted this free event at Gonzaga University. In community, we started the conversation of whether a plastic-free Spokane is possible when we all work together!

The Inspiration

Plastic People is an award-winning feature documentary that chronicles humanity’s fraught relationship with plastic and one woman’s mission to expose shocking new revelations about the impact of microplastics on human health. Spokane joined more than 50 communities across 21 countries exploring what can be done through the stories and research in this powerful film.

The film delves into big industry’s influence, as well as the strategically developed throwaway culture that increases their profits. And it addresses what communities around the world are doing to try and break free from the harms of plastic. Together with local nurse Chastity Kolb and Elyse Hochstadt of Spokane Zero Waste, we determined to bring the film to Spokane.

The Event

With local partners, we were able to create a community media experience. The event started off with local low-waste partners tabling as more than 100 guests made their way to their seats. Then, like all good movie theater experiences, we were able to open the documentary with a trailer on Spokane Zero Waste (playing above). We ended the event with local environmental experts answering questions about Spokane and our plastic-free future.

This event meant so much to the Rogue Heart team because it married our deep respect for the environment, our impact-driven storytelling, and our love of bringing community together to learn and connect in-person. We hope this event inspires real change in Spokane; we know it inspired us to be take more steps towards event management!

Our Friends

Shout out to all of the wonderful organizations that tabled and make Spokane more resilient every day. It gives us such hope to see the innovation, efforts, and good work here at home.
