My First Week at Rogue Heart Media

In Food Metaphors

October 30, 2018 by Alena

Hi! My name’s Alena Schoonmaker, and I just started at Rogue Heart Media as an associate producer. I’m so excited to be here and apply my life motto-cliche: jack of all trades, master of none, better than a master of one. I’ve spent the several years since getting my film degree jumping around and learning a little bit about everything I can. I think of it like a bunch of different eggs that I’ve gathered, and now I’m gonna crack them into the Rogue Heart Media pan and cook something good!

So today is my fourth day, and I’m excited to take a bite out of some of the great things they’ve got going on. My first day was like looking into a deli case of projects, but now I get to try some stuff. The first thing I’m starting is this blog post. I’m really excited about getting to write as an associate producer; I get to wear a lot of chef hats. I’m going to take a stab at blogs, case studies, and who knows what else.

I considered myself a writer for a lot of my life: all through high school and college and for awhile afterward, but I let it go in the last couple of years while I was working on other projects and at other jobs. I’m already having a fun flashback to working at school newspapers and yearbooks. I’m still kind of amazed that I get to write again – it’s like having a live bird pop out of your pie. (I know, reaching…) I also love getting back into my first love: editing. If it’s wrong to have an encyclopedic knowledge of grammar, diction, and syntax rules, I don’t want to be right.

I’m also excited to learn more about the filmmaking process from everyone here: my film degree got me into movie watching (which I apply as a film programmer for the Spokane International Film Festival), but I don’t know very much about the process or the equipment. My only equipment experience has been using 16mm cameras and Steenbeck editing tables at NYU. I hear a lot of innovations have been made since then, and I think they’re all in use at Rogue Heart Media to create the best flavor profiles to suit their clients’ needs.

See, look at me getting confused by that little Arriflex in 2012.

At the end of the day, I know, despite the vast cookbooks of knowledge I will learn at Rogue Heart Media, I’ll always be Le Cordon Bleu to my cats when I get home from work. But then I get to leave those ingrates and come back to writing, coordinating, and learning at Rogue Heart Media. Can’t wait to pick up my knife and fork and dig in!
